Mahler, Symphonie n°9

Monday 13 april - 20h30

Grand Théâtre de Provence

Vladimir Jurowski regularly excels in the operatic repertoire at the Opéra de Paris or the Salzburg Festival and in the symphonic repertoire with some of the world's most prestigious musical institutions such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the New York, Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras.

He has been at the helm of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 2007 and his profound knowledge of opera means he approaches Mahler's 9th like a drama without words. How could anyone write a “9th” symphony after Beethoven? Mahler was so marked by his illustrious predecessor that four of his preceding symphonies are choral or vocal. For his ninth, he dispensed with voices, letting the numerous instruments of the orchestra take over the full, voluptuous musical prose, filled with picturesque humour.
