The Easter Festival has invited the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra to perform for the third time.
The ensemble, one of Russia's oldest, was founded during Peter the Great's time. Over the years, its has had many famed composers at its helm such as Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Valery Gergiev has led the orchestra since 1988, a man the Figaro newspaper refers to as an “exceptional conduc.tor and captivating personality”. This year, the Russian musicians will bring Richard Strauss' symphonic poem, Ein Heldenleben to the Aix stage, where the composer blends the power of the instru.ments with the warmth of the melody and the sensibility of the phrasing.
The immense pianist Denis Matsuev will bring his alert and sensitive fingers to the passionate prose of Rachmaninoff's Piano concerto n°4.
